Happy birthday, Caden! It's hard to believe you came into my life five years ago. FIVE years! I've said it before and I'll say it again: my pregnancy with you, that fork in my life's road, was the best thing to ever happen. You've taught me a lot about resilience; about accepting life's curve balls and making the most of them.
And while I say it on repeat, I honestly cannot believe how big you're getting. You start kindergarten in just a few weeks. Even though you've been going to preschool since you were two, there is an ache in my heart that fears this change will be scary for you. I have big hopes that you will like your new school, that you'll make a lot of new friends and that you'll embrace learning as much as you embrace having dessert ;) I want to watch you thrive in this next chapter and prove to me again that change can be, and should be, embraced and celebrated.
While you grow more independent, I hope you continue to turn to me as your safe place; to laugh, to cry, to ask questions and tell secrets. I hope my tendency to act like a spazz continues to inspire you to be completely lost in silliness when the time strikes. And I hope to always catch a glimpse of you with joy in your eyes when we're together. By the way, I don't normally post outtakes of myself on here, but that photo above captures the look in your eyes that I love so much. Please always remember that I'll do anything to make you smile.
You'll always be Dad's 'little buddy' and he'll always be here to play hide and seek with you (no matter how hilariously bad you two are at that game). He'll laugh at your jokes as long as you promise to laugh at his too :) I am looking forward to this next year as you start new activities and play new sports because I know it will help your bond with Dad grow even stronger. Five is your favorite number so I have no doubt this will be your best year yet; your lucky one!
Don't ever lose your sense of adventure or your willingness to try new things. Remember that your quirks make you unique and there is no delight in being average. Love wholeheartedly and laugh every day because when you love and laugh abundantly, you live a beautiful life. Here's to you and the amazing five years we celebrate today!
To the moon and back,
