I get caught up in tracking all of our fun times... weekends away, holidays with family, trips to theme parks. I often forget to jot down what a "normal" day is like for us. Years from now, I'm sure I'll look back and think how did we do it?! And while I probably won't have a clear answer, it might be interesting to look back and see just how crazy-busy we were. So here is a little sample of our every day life (and a few every day, unedited photos to boot):
6:45am - Caden wakes up in our bed begging for cereal. We turn on Disney channel and tell him to wait for Vivienne to wake up.
7:00am - Viv starts to squeal from her crib. Caden and Nick scurry to get her and bring her back to me (still in bed). Nick tosses a diaper in the bed too. I get the luxury of 98% of the diaper changes.
7:15am - After checking emails and Instagram on my phone, Viv and I make our way to the kitchen. Fiber cereal for Viv, coffee or fresh juice for me.
7:45am - Nick and Caden are out the door. And Caden usually convinces Nick to come back inside because he needs a dinosaur vitamin. And then they're off again.
8:00am - I scramble to finish reading my bosses emails and opening up my work logs. Viv patiently snacks on her cereal and watches Disney channel.
8:20am - My boss calls and we start going through emails. If I'm lucky, Viv will remain content.
8:55am - I end the call with my boss and quickly make Viv a bottle. I strap her into her swing and grab her favorite blankie. Power on to speed 5 and goodnight baby! I don't have room for error with getting this nap started... my next work call is at 9am.
9:00am - I read 18 restaurant logs to my corporate operations team. Half the time, I'm thinking about other emails I need to send and I catch myself reading the logs outloud without even knowing what I am saying and if I'm actually reading or if I'm blurting out nonsense.
9:45am - I hang up the phone and proof read all the draft emails from my 8am call. Then it's finally time to get started on my own email. I get the next couple hours to get all emails for myself and my boss sorted out and replied to. And even though I don't have the time, I always check the YoungHouseLove and House*Tweaking blogs.
10:15am - Viv is awake. Diaper change, outfit change, and a pouch of baby food. She's getting used to playing by herself so I plop her in her room with some toys and periodically check her on the monitor.
11:30am - A quick brush of my hair and wash of my face. A little makeup is slapped on and some jeans and a t-shirt are pulled from closet.
11:45am - quickly make sure no urgent emails have come in while I've been getting ready. Then it's out the door to pick up Caden.
12:15pm - back at home with both of the kids and I grab something quick for lunch. I try to spend 30 or so minutes one on one with Viv. Caden usually heads straight for the iPad.
1:00pm - Viv is back down for a nap and Caden is either still on the iPad or playing in his room. I sort through all of the new emails and file any that I need to review with my boss.
2:00pm - another call with my boss. Go through the emails, draft responses, and review changes for his schedule. Lots of emails and lots of schedule changes. And Viv is usually fussing from the room because she's ready to get up. But I am not quite ready, so I let her stay. And more often then not, Caden is standing by my side saying, "Mommy! Bivienne is awake! I can hear her! I can hear her!" I silently shush him while I try to type everything my boss is saying on the line.
2:15pm - Grab Viv, feed her a snack and get her content with something to do.
2:20pm - back at my computer trying to make sense of the gibberish I typed while speaking with my boss. Draft email, proof email, send email, repeat. This goes on and on and on and for some reason takes up A LOT OF TIME during the day.
3:15pm - What had Caden been doing all this time? Is he honestly still watching cartoons on the iPad?? I fill the bathtub and let the kids splash around as I reply to emails on my phone. My parenting and work productivity are about 50% between 12pm and 7pm - in other words, I suck at both but somehow pull it off so my kids are alive and I'm still employed . I eagerly anticipate the days when my kids are both in school all. day. long.
4:45pm - I have an internal clock that makes me get antsy at this time. I MUST pick up the house because it looks like a tornado (or two kids) have burst through our doors. I am an expert picker upper... 15 minutes will get our whole condo in shape.
5:00pm - back to the computer for more emails. By this point, I've screen 3-4 calls from numbers I don't recognize. I listen to the voicemails and email the people back. I hate to be so impersonal but I can't risk Caden walking up when I'm speaking to a business client and blurting out, "MAMA I JUST WENT POO! CAN YOU WIPE??" It's happened before. And it was embarrassing!!!
5:30pm - Nick is home and I plead with him to take the kids while I finish emails.
6:00pm - Make a quick dinner with Nick's help. And more often than not, hear from my boss to review the final emails of the day. Are you catching onto the theme here? EMAIL!
6:30pm - Family dinner. We're good at sitting at one table, but we have a nasty habit of leaving the TV on during our meals.
7:00pm - Change Viv into PJs and a nighttime diaper, make her a bottle, and put her in bed. Thank goodness she's easy with sleep! She will almost always put herself to sleep and stay asleep the whole night.
7:30pm - I grab my computer to work from the couch. I finish any of my bosses outstanding emails and then start working on my own neglected email account. One of my goals for 2013 is to be more careful with my account... I frequently miss emails or mark them for follow up and then never actually follow up. I also use this time to proof read documents and compile notes for conference calls.
8:00pm - while I continue working, Nick gets Caden ready for bed. He sleeps on a makeshift cot next to our bed. Not ideal, but it works. He's the world's worst sleeper and I refuse to run the risk of him waking up Vivienne (they share a room).
9:00pm - Nick and I catch up on day and watch our favorite shows on our DVR.
10:45pm - We get ready for bed
11:00pm - I lay down and look through my emails on my phone and check Instagram. And hopefully I can get 8 hours of sleep without any dreams about... emails.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, my mom helps with the kids so I can remain sane. Depending on her own schedule, she'll help anywhere from a couple hours to a full day. On Thursday mornings, my sister in law watches Vivienne during my 2 hour conference call. And hopefully soon, I'll have Viv in part time daycare on Wednesdays and Fridays.
