The day has finally come. I'm going to step away from this little blog and focus my efforts on my children, my day job, and my photography. I'll be posting weekly sneak peeks, sessions, and entries for The Magic, The Wonder over on my other site, Love This Photography. So if you're interested in following along, you can hop on over there or follow me on Instagram. The archives of this site will stay live and who knows, maybe one day I'll be back to finish telling the story of our home remodel ;)
I blogged a special extended family session on Love This Photography today. I was so honored to be present for the big announcement that Michelle & Mike made - and it was really fun to see the love that surrounded those two! Hop on over to see the rest of the session here. I hope you love it as much as I do!
My first session of 2015 is blogged over on Love This Photography. I'm mildly obsessed with it - the colors, the vibrant grasses, the sun peeking through the trees, and the most gorgeous mama-to-be. It was one of those sessions that just *clicked* and it was a really positive way to start the year. Hop on over to see the rest of the mini session here. I hope you love it as much as I do!
Beach days in February. Who would have thought this little girl's birthday month would be so good to us?! We're definitely pinching ourselves... and hoping for many more days filled with sandcastles and low tide!
This week, I'm flashing back to the Kim Family mini session over on Love This Photography. It was fun to reminisce about the fall scenery and see how much the landscape has changed in the past three months with the cooler weather and sporadic rain.
Their three kids were adorable and deserve some type of medal for giving me so many shots to work with in a short, twenty minute window :) Hop on over to see the rest of the mini session here
Vivienne = I hope I remember the way you weasel your way out of every situation. It's too good to be mad at. I want to remember the sweet voice you have, and your ability to convince us all that you are not actually going to eat a chocolate popsicle. The popsicle that is unwrapped; clasped in your hand. I love how you sing and prance around when you think nobody is watching. I love the way you mispronounce words like "nuffing" as you try to plead your case. And how is it possible that your 3-year old mind can even think to say "I don't event see it"? You are witty and funny and perfect.
I hope I remember all of these moments that I haven't been able to catch on film; the way you ask for every color Slurpee when we go to 7-Eleven or the way you sweet talk your way into painting all over the back patio when you have a perfectly good easel to use. It's not about what you do, but how you do it. Your eyes get me every time. You tell blatant lies but convince me that you mean no harm. It's all just some sort of misunderstanding. Keep it up girl, because I'm believing every sweet word you say.
We set out for another light test/attempt to get a cranky toddler down for a nap last week. It always turns out that the best photos in this series happen unexpectedly. These two were laughing and exploring as I started snapping away. The fields were in full bloom and my dirty little munchkins were soaking in all of the fresh air. I want to put last Wednesday on repeat (minus the cranky-because-I-need-a-nap-toddler part). I just can't get enough of these fleeting, happy moments.
This week, I'm sharing Andee's maternity session over on Love This Photography. You might recognize her from The Honeybee - she's got amazing style and an amazing personality to boot. If you don't already follow her on Instagram, you should!
I love that she wanted to keep her maternity session simple and personal, capturing her growing belly in the comfort of her home with her daughter by her side. Hop on over to see the rest of the mini session here
We got in on the Valentine's fun this week with a mini sesh in our backyard. Hope you all are enjoying the week!
I'm sharing one of my favorite sessions over on Love This Photography today. Brooklyn made an early arrival and took quite a bit of convincing to fall asleep, but once she did *man* it was amazing! Her beautiful mama has a dear friend that founded a local company, Cleobella, and gave us access to some amazingly gorgeous textiles for the session. From the custom crib bumper that we lined in the Moses basket, to the vibrant blue throw that was layered under Brooklyn's nest, every bit of it was stunning. Not to mention the fact that Leslie and Chris are amazing and kind and were the sweetest when bonding with their little addition. I usually enjoy the outcome of my sessions but this one was BEYOND for me. Each image spoke to me and evoked the bright, happy, real memories that I love capturing. Hop on over to see the rest of the session here.
Caden, I hope I always remember your passion for making the best of new situations. I never played soccer as a kid and didn't really know what to expect when we signed you up. I certainly wasn't planning to hear you say things like, "We're gonna feast on those guys!" and "I'm gonna show 'em the tornado!" P.S. your 'tornado' move is quite hilarious, but rather ineffective. While you're running circles in the dirt, trying to wrestle up a twister, the other team is driving the ball toward the goal. So let's give that trick a rest, huh? But I digress. Your passion for soccer and every other activity you participate in, is palpable. I wish I had half as much excitement about meeting new people and trying new things. Instead, I get nervous and have flashbacks of what I was like as a terrifyingly shy child. You won't remember but I had an anxiety attack before your first soccer game because I was so nervous about meeting the other parents and showing up to the correct field and bringing an appropriate snack for all of your teammates. Where I struggle, you excel. I couldn't be more proud to see you blossom socially and walk into these new situations with total confidence. I hope I always remember to take your lead and accept new challenges with excitement and an open mind.
Last week, I took the kids to Carlsbad so I could test light for a session. We were referred two a few different spots and fell in love with one of the beaches instantly. The cliffs had been carved away by the waves, with rich green moss growing in and around hidden caves. It was other-wordly and truly magical. I did feel slightly discouraged because the afternoon light was casting harsh shadows and the spot, though awesome, would not be a good fit for portraits. I was prepping to leave when Viv walked toward the sea, as if she were mesmerized by the glare sparkling on the receding shoreline. I snapped a quick shot and knew it would be overexposed with my settings but I wanted to capture it anyway. And I'm so glad I did!
This week, I'm featuring Erika's maternity session on Love This Photography. I'm over the moon to share that the Spears family welcomed their second son, Sheldon, last weekend. They are such an amazing family and I couldn't be happier to watch them grow... cheers to Sheldon and all of the new memories they are making as a family of four!
Oh Viv. You sweet thing. I hope I remember the persistence of your personality. I want to remember the way you insist on walking your bunny to pick up Caden from school, turning a 1 minute walk into a 5 minute charade. I hope I remember the way you squeal with delight when you see our crossing guard. I want to remember the way you fling your hand up and shout, "Hiiiiiii Lisa!! I ha my bun bun!" Your smile stretches across your face and you beam with pride as you haphazardly swerve your stroller through the crosswalk and I hold your arm to guide you. I want to remember these days when you're too young to understand how to steer that dang stroller, so you occasionally walk to the front to straighten it out before you continue on your way. I hope I remember these small moments because they make you you, and you make me smile.
Last week, I shared five printable Valentines over on Fueling Moms. Not to toot my own horn, but I think they're pretty dang cute :) Elyse and I had a fun time coming up with some fresh ideas, and putting twists on things we're found to be successful via Pinterest. There is something for everyone, but not a single mention of candy (woohoo!). Check them out and download the artwork here.
I figured there was no better day to bust out the camera remote than my birthday :) My intention was to capture a few pics with my littles to celebrate 31... the shoot quickly turned into giggles and the need for a certain 2-year old to control the remote. Nick stepped in, and Viv captured one of my favorite photos to date. A simple laugh with my main squeeze as he joked about what he was getting me for my big day. These photos are simple but they represent where we are. Who we are. And what this life is all about.
Oh SoCal, how I love thee! It wouldn't be January if we weren't making daily trips to the beach for low tide. The brisk air, the empty beaches, the warm sun on our backs. This might be my favorite month of the whole year...
Well, this is it! My final installment of The Magic, The Wonder for 2014. Although I missed 17 weeks, I was able to capture memorable moments of my children's everyday life for a majority of the year. I was warned by a friend that starting my own business would result in very few photos of my own family... oh the irony of being a photographer! This challenge helped me focus on my kiddos even when my session schedule got down right cray cray. Instead of rushing off to test light in new locations by myself, I brought my kids along. I let them explore, I let them play, and I photographed them living in the moment. I captured their magic & their wonder and that was the big goal in the end.
I'll be continuing with this challenge for 2015, incorporating occasional portrait sessions into the mix. Who knows, I might even pick back up with self portraiture so my children have more printed memories of me as well ;)
Here's to a wonderful 2014! I'll see you next year :)
Happy Thursday! Can you believe 2014 is almost over?! I'm gearing up to host the holidays at our house and I'm sharing five easy tips for stress-free entertaining over on Fueling Moms today. Check it out why don't ya :)
Happy December! It's hard to believe we're already into the final month of the year. But here we are, in full swing with the holidays! Remember a few weeks back when I hinted at a collaboration I was joining?? Fueling Moms officially launched this week! Read more about our mission here.
We are very excited to be starting off with our first event, the Mom Market! If you're in South Orange County, come by and visit us this Friday and Saturday in Capo Beach (details below). Each booth will be operated by a mother who owns or represents a business and there will be plenty of handmade goods for purchase. I also hear Santa will be making an appearance ;) If you're able to join us, and interested in giving back to the community, we have several options: Project Lead Kindly will be accepting donations of certain toiletries to aid women & children that are victims of domestic violence and homelessness. We'll also have an area to donate unwrapped toys and gift cards for FAM, assisting Orange County families that are unable to provide gift for their children this holiday season. Donations are not required, but always appreciated. We hope to see you there! :)
Oh heyyyyyy! I'm back but just for a minute. I have to stay focused on LTP because my schedule has me editing at least a session a day after work... eeek! Here is a peek at some recent happenings for me. Amongst them: Viv's most epic school pics, some amazing thank you gifts that were kindly sent my way, autumn sunsets, and some behind the scenes of LTP and Fueling Moms :) Hope you all had a great week!
Remember the terrarium I made last year with neon pink gravel? Well, I still have it and it's doing really well in our backyard despite my neglectful tendencies ;) I was thrilled to hear today that it's featured over on Bob Vila's website in his roundup of Tiny Gardens You Can Grow on a Tabletop. Hooray! And if that wasn't exciting enough, it was #1 of 13 images in the gallery which makes it good luck in my own, weird way of thinking because 1/13 is my birthday. It's kind of like whenever I see the clock at 1:13 and I make a wish. Am I totally on my own with that one? It's cool, I enjoy being odd in my own little ways :)
Anyhow, this made for a very happy Tuesday in our little home and that's exactly what I needed when I've been feeling overwhelmed with work, kids, photography sessions, editing, holiday planning, and life in general. Oh and the cherry on top? Nick had today off work and after 4 hours with the kids, he exclaimed, "Oh my god, I don't know how you do this with them everyday." Yesss! :: insert fist pump and celebratory dance for a husband who finally understands!! ::
